State Senator Stewart J. Greenleaf (R, Montgomery, Bucks) announced today that Hatboro-Horsham School District and United Parcel Service in Willow Grove have been selected by the PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to receive Alternative Fuels Incentive Grants (AFIG) for projects to improve air quality through alternative fuel use.
Hatboro-Horsham School District will receive $22,500 to help purchase 5 new propane school buses. The project will utilize the fueling infrastructure of neighboring Upper Moreland School District. An estimated 7,500 gallons of gasoline will be saved annually.
UPS has been awarded $200,000 to continue the conversion of its Willow Grove vehicle operations to run on natural gas. The funds will replace 20 class 8 tractors that run on diesel with those that run on natural gas. The project will save approximately 462,963 gallons of fuel per year.
The Alternative Fuels Incentive Grant (AFIG) provides funding for projects to improve air quality through alternative fuel use. Awards are granted in two categories: Vehicle Purchase/Retrofit and Refueling Infrastructure. The awards for vehicles state-wide will save approximately 1.2 million gallons of gasoline. DEP has awarded more than $1.9 million to Pennsylvania schools and businesses.
“These new busses and vehicle conversions will help reduce pollution and improve the air we breathe,” said Senator Greenleaf. “These projects are saving thousands of gallons of gasoline per year. I congratulate Hatboro-Horsham School District and UPS for taking this environmentally responsible initiative that will pay dividends for our communities.”
